Our Programs

Toddler Class

We offer a modified, traditional Montessori program, 5 days/week, for our Toddlers: children ages 18 months through 2 years. The toddler environment is adapted to the physical and motor development needs of these younger students. In keeping with Montessori philosophy of promoting independence, we will assist your child with toilet training. Our basic toddler program is 9 am – 3 pm, but we also offer extended care hours (7 am – 6:30 pm).  This program is available at each of our campuses, Columbia, Olney, Silver Spring and Laurel.

Primary Program

Our Primary program is for children ages 2 1/2 – 5 1/2. We offer morning classes from 8:30 AM – 11:15 AM or an afternoon class from 12:15 PM – 3:00 PM, 5-days a week. The children are introduced sequentially to the following five areas of the prepared environment: practical life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural. Self-esteem, concentration skills, and good work habits are developed as a result of this environment.

Kindergarten Program

The Kindergarten program at The Julia Brown Schools provides the five-year old with a unique kindergarten experience. Classes are from 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM. It involves a morning Primary class with mixed-ages and an afternoon class with just Kindergarten students. The children, in the afternoon class, continue to use extensions of the Montessori materials, which are introduced in the morning class. This enhances their ability to develop concentration and complete more challenging work.

 Junior Program (1st – 3rd Grade)

The Junior Program at The Julia Brown Schools serves as a natural continuation for children attending our Primary classes and is fully accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education. Classes are from 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM. This program allows for continuity in the development of good work habits, and scholastic skills begun in earlier years.

Working alone or in small groups, with direction from staff with a high adult-to-student ratio, the children progress at their own natural pace. The skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic are stressed. However, the program is broad based covering many areas of interest.

Before/Aftercare Program

All of the above programs can be supplemented with before and after care. We are open from 7 AM – 6 PM. Children in this program attend one Montessori class each day. Before and after class, they participate in early childhood activities, such as free play, arts and crafts, and outdoor play.

THE JULIA BROWN SCHOOLS are private, non-sectarian schools; as such enrollment is non-discriminatory. The JBS curriculum is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
